The HorniBaboon BarPosted by neil in Reviews and Tips |
|
Sometimes we have a problem deciding where to hang out, like a couple of
nights ago.
We were out with some friends and were wondering where to stop off, when we remembered that the Hornibaboon bar was open.
I must admit that the bar has been open for a while now, but you know how it is when something is right in front your nose and you still don't notice it. I'm sure that I'm not the only one out there who has turned the place upside down looking for shades or glasses which had been perched on top of your
head the whole time??! Sounds familiar??
Anyway, we decided to stop off at the Lazy Lagoon (where the Hornibaboon
is).Its on the Lagoon main road (hence the name) has a great view, and the crowd that frequents there, is a nice mix of locals and visitors alike.
We just wanted to stop in for a few drinks, but ended up staying for a meal as well.
The bar itself is very rustic, but that is exactly what we like about it. Its different from the usual places which all try to be neat and modern looking, which just means that they have no personality or atmosphere.
Just looking at the photos will give you some idea of what i'm talking
about.
Rather than the usual 'finished' lumber, you can see branches and beams from the trees that were used. Some of it may look a little strange, but there is certainly nothing weak about it.
We don't normally go looking for 'upscale' places to hang out (not that there are many here on the island), but most of the charm in the Hornibaboon is because the atmosphere is so relaxed. What you see is what you get! Its the sort of place you go to hang out with friends.
Well, things have obviously been working out well, because instead of only opening in the evenings, Nigel has started opening the bar all day long and serving meals.
The food is good and reasonably priced. Had the shark and fish from the menu and they were both delicious.
We noticed that when they have 'live' music, the place gets crowded.
Its local musicians playing a selection of jazz, Caribbean, Rock, Blues and
dance.
Not your typical 'nightclub' scene - you can just relax, hangout and enjoy the music or dance, whatever you like.
Staff - everyone is always wondering what the service is like. Like just about every place on the island (with a few notable exceptions), it is consistent, with some days exceptional. We've been there when they have been very helpful and friendly, with a great habit of turning up just as your ice cubes hit the bottom of your glass and your drink needs refreshing, as well as when you practically have to send up smoke signals in the hope of someone noticing your beer bottle is empty. Overall, i would say the service is good - better than most places. Besides, we didn't go there for the fantastic service, we went there because it had a great bar and fun atmosphere! Here are a few things you may need to know:
Bar is open from 10am till 12pm. On fridays and saturdays, it is open till 2am int he morning.
They are located on the Lagoon road, next to the Foodland supermarket and have lots of room for parking.
