Grenada: Hidden Waterfall

grenada waterfall

Grenada has several more waterfalls and cascades than what you normally see in the brochures.
The nice thing is that most are pretty secluded and definitely off the beaten track. That means you usually need a guide or someone to point you in the right direction, and good hiking boots.......(i would suggest taking a guide, just to be sure you actually FIND the falls you are looking for).

We were recently in the Grand Roy area, which is on the west coast between St.George and Gouyave.
Basically, you pass the Concord river heading north along the west coast and when you get to the next bridge and small village, then you are there. Take the turnoff (right turn) at the police station and head up the concrete road until you get to the end, next to the NAWASA water storage/treatment plant.

The weather was perfect for it, not too hot and sunny, but with a nice sea breeze (which was giving us rough seas on the west coast, but that wasn't important).
We started the hike at the water treatment plant and headed up the valley, following the course of the river.
The trail is fairly overgrown, but not impossible to make out. The first part is actually along an old plantation access road, so you cannot go astray easily.

As the dry season continues, it will be much easier to make out the trail as it will not be overgrown by the foliage. It will take about a half hour to reach the falls themselves, but it is worth it.

The falls themselves are sandwiched between the steep walls of the valley, which also ensures that it gets a constant supply of water.

There is a nice pool at the base of the falls, and while they are not very high, the location more than makes up for any shortcomings.

One of the nice things about this location is that you can walk down the river easily, which will take you back to the road.

There are lots of these hidden gems throughout the island, and i don't mean waterfalls alone.

If you are in the mood to do some exploring, you can also find bits and pieces of our island's history peeking out from the bushes in unexpected places.
