Slightly off the beaten path, and where you can go on your own if you rent a vehicle, are the small cascades upstream of the Seven Sisters Falls.
We're not talking about the bigger Falls which are the more popular destination of visitors and locals alike, but the small Cascades on one of the streams which feed the main Falls.
Its the perfect place to relax away from the beach and just enjoy a cool soak in the river. Its usually deserted, as hardly anyone goes there. To get there, take the central main road up to Grand Etang. The entrance to get there is the first turn off on your right, after passing the lake. There is no sign, but the road is easy to find. You can drive in a little ways to park, but we would not suggest going much further, especially in the rainy season, as you may get stuck in the mud. At the moment, it is nice and dry.
Once parked, it is a nice easy 15 minute walk to the stream. Simply follow the track straight in for about 150 yards. Once this track ends, you will see a trail which leads into the brush and down a small embankment to the river. You can't miss it, as the path is well marked and there are steps cut into the slope to make it easier to walk. There is a nice hiking trail which goes further in, but if you are only interested in going to the cascade and pool, then once you come to the river, just turn left and follow it downstream about 50 yards.
The rocks can be a little slippery when wet, so best to watch you footing. You have to climb down the first cascade, but this is quite easy as there are lots of hand and footholds.
If the first pool is not to your liking, then there is another much larger one just a couple of yards further on.
To get down to this one, you will have to look for the small path on the right, which takes you down the embankment. The pools are not deep enough to jump into, but perfect for just floating and paddling around and enjoying the cool water. We did notice that there were lots of hummingbirds around, but just couldn't get a photo of one.
The walk back to the start is easy, but just remember to leave things as you found them, so others can enjoy.
