Real West Indian Breakfast in Mt. Moritz

Well, this last Sunday we finally made our way up Mt. Moritz, to the community center, with a couple of friends to sample the breakfast we had heard so much about.

When we got there, the parking was not a problem, as the entire playing field by the community center was available. Everything was nicely laid out and organized, and of course the first dilemma presented itself - there is such a wide variety of food to choose from, that you can easily get sidetracked.
Just to give you a very rough idea of what is available - for EC$15/person, you had a choice of:
fried jacks, breadfruit balls, salt fish, smoked herring, salad, blood pudding, fried breadfruit, johnny bakes, fish cakes, fried bakes, provision and coffee, cocoa or fruit juice.
Of course, you could also have a sampling of all of it, which we did, but make sure to bring your appetite with you!! The food was good, with the fish cake being nice and crisp. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the smoked herring, but it was nicely done as well.

Blood pudding is a tossup, either you like it or you don't. I found that it went well with the fried jacks and the johnny bakes.

What we noticed, after we had sampled everything else, was that there were additional dishes available on a section on the side, such as: crab back, pig souse, lambi souse, tarts, patties, bread pudding and buns, to name a few.
Moni likes crab back and I'mm a fan of pig souse, but there was absolutely no way we are going to be able to sample it this time around, as we were absolutely stuffed already.

I guess this is an incentive to visit again on the next Sunday they hold the breakfast ;-)

Seating was arranged with benches and tables beneath tents, so if by chance it started to rain, that would not be a problem. One pleasant surprise when we got there, was that there was a live band playing. This was followed by a steel band, so the entertainment was ongoing for several hours.

We had a picnic table to the front, so had a prime seat for the live music.
This Sunday, it was bright and sunny, so the shade was very welcome.
We did notice that, near the entrance, there was also a small vegetable market going, with produce from gardens in the area for sale.

The breakfast in Mt. Moritz is held on the last Sunday in the month, and is quite well attended.
It runs for the morning, and given the amount of food that we saw, i think it would run for most of the day.

To get there, you take the western main road out of St.George, past Grand Mal and keep an eye out for the Mt. Moritz sign on the right hand side of the road.
Take this turnoff uphill and follow the road till you get to the community center and playing field. No need to worry about getting lost, as there are a few signs pointing the way to the breakfast, or you can just stop and ask someone to point you in the right direction.

Parking is not a problem, as the whole playing field is available for that.
The breakfast starts around 7am in the morning, and usually runs all morning.
Everyone is welcome, and there is a playing area for small kids, with an inflatable castle. (They also have the entire playing field, so they can burn off all that excess energy.)
The breakfast was a great experience, with lots of people from all over the south of the island showing up for it, or simply to sit with friends and have a cup of coffee.
Its not something you do every weekend, as the originality will wear thin pretty quickly, which is the whole point of having it only 1 sunday a month.

A special thanks to Osmond Griffith for the use of some of his photos of the breakfast... they constantly remind us of the excellent time we all had.
